Over-driven valve pre-amps add sweet even harmonics to the input signal, then odd harmonics also emerge at higher gain and attack.

Conversely, many overdrive and distortion pedals create odd harmonics and only small amounts of even harmonics. Some pedals based on ‘asymmetrical clipping’ use mismatched diodes to extract even harmonics, but these cannot be easily tuned … the type of diodes are fixed in the pedal and that’s it.

Generating even harmonics that can be blended in and out with classic odd harmonic overdrive / distortion in a single pedal is a ‘holy grail’ quest.
